Dear Representative/Senator __________:
I am the school librarian at _________ Elementary School in your district. I appreciate your support of public education and request that you support the proposed ALSDE budget request for Library Enhancement funds at $200 per teacher unit. Libraries were last fully funded in FY2008. Since then, we went six years with zero funding from the state and have had only a meager amount for the past three years. As a result, print materials in our nonfiction sections have a average publication dates in the late 1990s.
School libraries lead the way for teaching multiple literacy skills, and our students deserve and need new, current materials in order to succeed. Last year my students were so excited to see the 38 books that state funds allowed us to purchase, but sadly it was not enough for my school of 350 students. School libraries often provide the only access to books and technology to our most needy students in a very cost effective way. I know there are many needs in education, but I hope you see how the investment in school libraries benefits all our students.
I will be happy to provide you other materials and statistics to support school libraries as well as serve as a resource for you if you should need it. Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
